Sustainability:  Perfecting the Green Waste Transformation Loop

Veransa is perfecting the green loop of wood and yard waste recycling.  We produce products that are beneficial to farmers and the ecosystem as a whole.  We create value from wood and yard waste by transforming it into usable commodities that:

  • Regenerate agricultural soil;

  • Restore watersheds and waterways; and,

  • Reduce carbon in the atmosphere.

As populations grow, so grows generation of green waste.  In sub-tropical states like Florida, green waste is generated year-round.  On average each Floridian generates between 500 and 1000 lbs. of wood and yard waste annually.  It is estimated that Floridians generate over 7 million tons of this material, with over 3 million tons in the Tampa Region alone. 

Many states, including Florida, have laws that provide for this material to be recycled, and prohibit disposal in landfills.  However, most green waste in Southeast is either incinerated or dispose of by spreading it onto open fields where it rots and emits greenhouse gasses for little or no environmental or economic benefit.  Veransa's value added recycling approach creates genuine environmental and economic sustainability. 

Our OMRI certified organic compost and engineered soil products help enrich and improve the quality of agricultural land, prevent soil erosion, increase plant growth, increase forage production, increase soil water retention, and increase carbon absorption from the atmosphere. 

Our energy feedstock and pellets provide a sustainable and green alternative to coal, and a superior carbon footprint to traditional wood pellets.  Our woody feedstock is exclusively composed of recovered wood waste from urban forests that must be maintained anyway (a sunk carbon cost). Veransa's energy products are a sustainable and renewable alternative to coal without cutting down healthy trees and forests.

Regenerating Soil

Compost is an essential microbial source…a probiotic for the land that promotes a more diverse and healthy soil ecosystem, and results in more nutritious food for people. 


Food grown with Veransa's compost has higher sugar content, more vitamins, and even tastes better.  Our compost and engineered soils help farmers to implement sustainable regenerative agriculture, reducing dependence on chemical fertilizers, preventing soil erosion, reducing water usage by improving water retention and increasing the nutrient density of soil.

Restoring Watersheds and Waterways

Chemical fertilizers applied by many farmers are not only deteriorating soil health and leading to less nutrient dense foods, they are actually harming our watersheds and waterways and the unique creatures that live in them, including the manatee.

Traditional chemical fertilizers quickly seep through Florida's sandy soil into the watershed, or run off into surrounding waterways when it rains.  Not only does this deprive farmers of the full value of the fertilizers they use, but when that fertilizer reaches the water table, water ways and lakes, it contaminates the water, damages natural ecosystems, and threatens the tourism industry.  This is particularly problematic in the Lake Okeechobee basin and surrounding waterways, where it causes toxic algae blooms.

Veransa’s compost and engineered soils offer a simple yet effective solution to this complex problem.  Whether used alone or blended with fertilizers, our compost locks in nutrients, increases soil water and fertilizer retention capacity, and protects the watershed and waterways, while increasing crop yields and nutrient density.

Reducing Carbon Emissions 

Veransa is committed to work towards a carbon neutral future.  


  • Application of compost to soils with low organic matter is a proven method for sequestering CO2.  Veransa will work with its compost customers to document and monetize the carbon savings.

  • Using wood waste instead of harvesting living trees for biomass energy fuel not only supplants use of coal, but leaves those trees standing so that they can continue sequestering carbon.

  • Providing an alternative to landfilling green waste, which represents up to 40% of the waste stream, reduces methane emissions, a well known climate change gas.


  • Going the extra mile and working toward an all electric processing and manufacturing system that not only reduces costs and increases reliability, but reduces Veransa's operating carbon footprint, and increases the environmental value of its products and services.
